High School Roundup (April 20): Riders, Pirates baseball teams get come-from-behind wins

BASEBALL 

KENT ROOSEVELT 12, BARBERTON 11 (8 inn.)

Phil Kaderle earned the win in relief, and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to lift the visiting Rough Riders (8-8, 4-4 Suburban) past the Magics (2-8, 1-6) on Thursday.

Barberton stormed out to a 5-1 lead after one inning, but Roosevelt rallied with four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to take an 11-7 lead. Barberton forced extra innings with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Nate Ritchey drove in three runs with a double and single to pace the Rough Riders. Riley Day had two singles, a double and two RBI, and scored the game-winning run.

SOUTHEAST 12, COVENTRY 8

The host Pirates scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a come-from-behind Portage Trail Conference cross-division victory on Thursday.

Kyle Pruitt homered and singled, driving in two runs for Southeast. Devin Gear contributed a double, single and two RBI, while Gabe Carrington added a double and an RBI for the Pirates.

Kyle Black went deep for the Comets (1-7), while John Stone had a double and single with three RBI and Adam White added a single and two runs batted in.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL 

KENT ROOSEVELT OVER VILLA ANGELA-ST. JOSEPH,

25-21, 27-25, 25-18

The host Rough Riders (3-9) started the second half of the 2017 season by sweeping Villa Angela-St. Joseph.

Sam Smith led a balanced Roosevelt attack with eight kills and three blocks. Joshua Montanari finished with five kills and four blocks, while Travis Verh added nine assists.
