MAC Men's Basketball Roundup: Zips rally to beat Miami 54-50

OXFORD -- Brian Walsh and Demetrius Treadwell scored 13 points apiece and Akron got hot in the second half to rally and edge Miami (Ohio) 54-50 Saturday in Mid-American Conference play.

Walsh and Treadwell combined to go 10-of-18 shooting for the Zips (19-4, 10-0), who shot just 24 percent (6-of-25) in the first half and trailed 25-16 at the break.

Alex Abreu, Akron's third-leading scorer, struggled from the field but dished out six assists. His lone field goal gave the Zips its first lead of the second half, 35-34, with 7:44 left to play.

Miami (8-14, 3-7) rallied to tie the game 45-45 at the 2:32 mark but Akron outscored the RedHawks 8-1 over the next two minutes to seal the victory.

Allen Roberts had 11 for Miami, which shot 36 percent (8-of-22) in the second half compared to 56 percent (13-of-23) for Akron.

Ohio University 72, Bowling Green 63

ATHENS — Reggie Keely scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Ohio to a 72-63 victory over Bowling Green in a Mid-American Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

T.J. Hall and Walter Offutt contributed 12 points each, and C.J. Cooper had 10 points and eight assists for the Bobcats (17-6, 8-1), who are 13-1 at home.

Ohio is 8-1 in MAC games for the first time since the 1984-85 season and has won nine of its past 10 games.

A’uston Calhoun had 19 points and eight rebounds, Jordan Crawford scored 17 points and Anthony Henderson chipped in eight points and 12 rebounds for the Falcons (9-14, 4-6).

Ohio led 35-34 at halftime and jumped to a 48-37 advantage on a steal and layup by Hall.

Bowling Green never got closer than seven points, and Ohio expanded the lead to 70-55 Cooper’s free throw with 2:32 remaining.

Buffalo 59, Northern Illinois 54

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Javon McCrea scored 16 points and Tony Watson had 14 points to help Buffalo beat Northern Illinois 59-54 on Saturday.

Auraum Nuiriankh recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds — four offensive — for the Bulls (9-15, 4-6 Mid-American Conference), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Buffalo never trailed in the second half, but had a tough time holding off the Huskies. The Bulls had a 52-41 lead with 4:27 left in the game when Nuiriankh made two free throws.

Northern Illinois cut the deficit to three points, 57-54, with 22 seconds left on Aksel Bolin’s layup. But the Huskies (5-17, 3-7) were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Ball State 65, Western Michigan 62

MUNCIE, Ind. — Jauwan Scaife scored a career-high 30 points, including three 3-pointers, to help Ball State snap Western Michigan’s seven-game winning streak with a 65-62 victory Saturday evening.

Scaife, a senior, was 9-of-16 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line, including two free throws with 7 seconds left that gave the Cardinals (9-13, 3-7 Mid-American) a three-point cushion. WMU’s David Brown then missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Toledo 60, Eastern Michigan 52

TOLEDO — Rian Pearson scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Toledo to a 60-52 win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday night.

Toledo (11-10, 7-3 Mid-American Conference) extended its win streak to five games. The Rockets are now in a first place tie in the MAC’s West Division with Western Michigan, which lost to Ball State 65-62 on Saturday.
