Determined to take the ball to the basket,

Determined to take the ball to the basket, the Rough Riders drove the lane with conviction, resulting in 38 trips to the free-throw line. Although it converted only 23 of those attempts, that was more than enough for Kent Roosevelt to turn back host Field 61-42 in a non-league contest.

"We planned to have our guards penetrate as much as possible," said Kent Roosevelt coach Cameron Black, whose squad rebounded from Saturday night's opening loss to Bedford. "We know we have three outstanding guards and we have to utilize them in that manner as much as possible."

One of those three, senior Maya Gilbert, canned 8-of-12 from the stripe and led the Rough Riders (1-1) with 14 points. Senior third guard Meghan Sandor added eight points, while sophomore point guard Caitlin Carroll had seven.

With 6-foot-3 junior Kelly Yahner sitting out the game due to a twisted knee, Black's bench picked up the slack, coming through with 21 points, led by sophomore Deidre LaFollette's nine tallies.

"We had 21 points off the bench and we set a goal for at least 16 points," said Black. "We exceeded that and that's a big, big turning point for us _ contributions from all our players, no letdown."

Behind seven points from 6-2 Kristen Benjamin (9 points), the Rough Riders were able to jump out to a narrow 12-10 lead after the first eight minutes.

That advantage grew to double digits at the half, 31-21, as Kent Roosevelt pressed the Falcons (0-1), not allowing Field to get going offensively.

"We had to jump-start our offense," said Black, "and we figured to jump-start it by playing good defense first, and then letting our offense come through."

Midway through the third quarter, the Rough Riders extended their advantage to 16 points at 41-26 and were in control the rest of the way.

Sophomore point guard Ebony King led the Falcons with nine points. Danielle Knapp followed with seven and Julie Curtiss chipped in with six.

Field coach Jerry Clemens was unavailable for comment following the contest.
