Mary Delores Young was born in Akron on December 15, 1928 to Artelia Chance Fincannon and Ralph Fincannon.
She graduated from East High School with honors and married Ralph Young on August 14, 1945, as soon as he returned from the Pacific Arena of World War II. These two members of the greatest generation began the first segment of their story in Rootstown, Ohio. Dad worked his entire career for The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, road testing division, while Mom was an excellent homemaker, cook, gardener, canner, seamstress, and fundraiser for us, Bob and Dick, as we played various sports throughout the school years.
Friends were always welcome at our house, even through the night, as teens played poker and camped out. Food was abundantly shared. Mom was always generous in accepting adopted dogs, cats, ducks, chickens and the various reptiles. After both of us were married, mom and dad began Chapter Two, in Caldwell, Ohio, at a beautiful 160 acre farm, raising Black Angus cattle.
Grandchildren remember those fun years, as they explored the hills and streams, had campfires, and skated on frozen ponds. Mom and Dad were very active members of the River Fork Baptist Church in Elk Township, enjoying their church family, and adopting the unofficial third brother, Reverend Dean Stanton and Tina.
Mom loved lending a helping hand upon the arrival of new babies, or assisting those dealing with illness. Chapter Three was spent in Florida, due to health issues. Mom again made new neighborhood friends, and, instead of vegetable gardening, was able to build a giant flower garden under the two large live oak trees in her yard. Always able to start plants from the tiniest of cuttings, she was now living in plant heaven! Spider plants could be separated and dropped to the ground to flourish. impatiens, same! Pineapple tops could be removed, grown into plants with baby pineapples! This wonderful chapter also lasted for about twenty years.
Dad passed in 2009, and Alzheimer's disease slowly and nastily destroyed mom. She entered into the sweet Garden of Eternal Life on May 5, 2017. We choose to remember the glorious memories and blessings that showered our lives. Thank you, mom!
