Dr. Robert William Stager
Dr. Robert William Stager, 89, of Kent and Highland Beach, Fla. passed away peacefully on, January 26, 2013. He shared 58 loving years with his wife, Dee, who died in 2009. He's survived by his daughter, Janise, and her husband, Martin, of Massachusetts, his son, Richard, and his wife, Dr. Margaret Stager of Shaker Heights and his grandchildren, who brought him great joy: Maggie Cohen and Sam and Ben Stager.
In 1951, Dr. Stager moved to Kent where he opened his optometric practice. He quickly embraced the community as a tireless volunteer: from the Lions Club and Jaycees to Toastmasters and the Masons, from Little League to Kent State University.
Dr. Stager graduated from the University of Chicago and Ohio State University College of Optometry. He proudly served as a first Lieutenant in the Army during WWII in Europe.
He spent his early years in Leadville, Colorado, where his father owned a general store. His family then moved to Cleveland, where he graduated from Glenville High School. His sister, Vivian, still lives in Cleveland. His sister, Dr. Evelyn Paley of Denver, died in 2008.
An accomplished racquetball player and avid golfer, he will be remembered for his wit, curiosity, intelligence and passion for family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, February 3rd at Hillel at Kent State University, 613 East Summit Street in Kent. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hillel or a charity of choice.
