Phyllis Bartholomew (Smith) Tilton

Phyllis Bartholomew (Smith) Tilton died on Sunday November 25, 2012 at age 87 at Stow-Glen Nursing Home, Stow, Ohio. She was born January 12, 1925 to Everett and Agnes (Reed) Bartholomew in South Russell, Ohio during a snow storm with no electricity.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Norma (Hostetler) Green and husbands, William R. Smith and John B. Tilton.

She is survived by daughters, Dianne (Randy) Roberts and Nadine (Richard) Ross, sister, Winifred Hull, stepdaughter, Susan (Tom) Maas, stepson, John (Gabriela) Tilton, and stepdaughter, Patty (Richard) Vasquez. Grandchildren, Susan (Will) Jones, Mary (Tony) Carrossellia, Amy Maas, Bowen (Courtney) Ross, Erin (Mike) Oberuch, Kathryn, Christopher, Sarah, and Gabrielle Vasquez. Great grandchildren, Hannah and Nicholas Carrossellia, and Megan and Emily Oberuch.

Phyllis Bartholomew Tilton graduated as valedictorian from Auburn High School in 1943 and began her banking career at Central National Bank in Chagrin Falls, OH. She married William R. Smith on May 18, 1946. She worked for 24 years in Kent, OH, working at Portage National Bank and eventually Huntington Bank main office downtown Kent, retiring as Operations Manager. She enjoyed her many friendships with employees, Carol Birkner, Ann Diltz and the countless customers for whom she provided meticulous service and care.

Mrs. Tilton was always active in church, teaching Sunday school, volunteering on many committees, and accepting roles of responsibility, such as Deaconess. In addition to church and civic organizations, Mrs. Tilton was most proud of her work with Al-Anon, dedicating over 41 years to supporting families struggling with alcoholism. In all her organizations, Mrs. Tilton found many friendships with people of all ages and backgrounds. Antiques and antique glass ware were passions of Mrs. Tilton and led her on many adventures searching for numerous "diamonds in the rough" which she rescued and appreciated throughout her life. She lived for many years within walking distance to her work in downtown Kent, OH and for over 20 years in Hudson, OH before moving to Stow-Glen Nursing Home.

She married John Tilton on January 2, 1981 and enjoyed a happy union until his death on December 9, 2010. Phyllis and John enjoyed traveling, especially to Scotland and Germany with fellow Hudson citizens. They were both active members of First Congregational Church of Hudson, enjoying many friendships made there as well as with their neighbors.

Friends will be received WEDNESDAY, November 28, 2012 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at JOHNSON-ROMITO FUNERAL HOME, 19 E. MAIN ST. (ON THE SQUARE) HUDSON, OH (330) 650-4181. Private family interment at Draper Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held THURSDAY, November 29, 2012 at 1:30 pm at First Congregational Church of Hudson, 47 Aurora St. Hudson, OH. In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in memory of Phyllis B. Tilton to First Congregational Church of Hudson, Vitas Innovative Hospice 600 East Granger Rd. #100 Cleveland, OH 44131 or to Stow-Glen Nursing Home 4285 Kent Rd. Stow, OH 44224.
