Mary H. Long

"Together Again"

Atwater

I lost the rest of my mother Sunday morning. I say the rest because part of her was already gone. It went with my dad on News Years Day 2008. High School sweethearts, married over 60 years, life without him just was not enough.

My mother's parents were both born in England, Bert Cowley and Minie Harvey came to Akron from the southern tip of England where the rocks meet the sea. Perhaps that explains her love of the ocean, even though she could not swim. Mare, yes that's what I always called her, was an only child, married an only child, had only one child and one grandchild.

My mother was head majorette at North High School in Akron. She was beautiful in that white outfit and boots.

She married high school sweetheart, Gerald "Buzz" Long, in 1946.

At 25 she lost her first son and a year later her mother whom she adored. My other grandmother Inez Raupach-Long-Casey would become her "Mother" and best friend.

We had a wonderful family. She went along with my dad's building projects and my cars, during our many years in the car business. She handled all the paperwork and drove every kind of car from here to there. One trip home the Cadillac she was driving developed ignition problems, every so often it would backfire like a gunshot and shoot flames out the tailpipe. She just kept driving and laughed about it later.

Mare loved cats. Many years ago we built a tool shed in the back yard. Immediately she started moving in all her furry friends. It has been the cat house ever since. I could write much more, but at these rates I can't afford to.

In just one day I feel a huge empty spot in my life. Many times I wanted to "kill" her but now I would do any thing to have her back.

She was preceded in death by infant son; husband, Gerald "Buzz" Long; father, Bert Cowley; mother, Minie Harvey-Cowley; father-in-law, Ted Casey; mother- in-law, Inez Raupach-Long-Casey.

Survived by son, Tim Long; daughter-in-law, Peggy Tyrakowski; grandson, Jeremy (Kristy) Long; cousin, Rick Harvey; cousins, Irene Raupach and family; friend/helper, Rose Wolford; and many, many cousins and friends.
