Kent Church DemolitionGet the Flash Player to see this player. October 27, 2006
This Video depicts the condition of the Church of Christ, Scientist. This church has been slated for demolition by the Kent Free Library Board. Members of the Kent Historical Society feel the Library Board is being hasty in its decision to demolish this building. The Historical Society was led to believe that the building was in a deteriorated state and should be demolished. The video reveals that the building is in fine condition and can serve the Kent community as a public space. Members feel the community should be making the decision as to whether this structure should be demolished or not and not the Library Board. Comments

WoW! Wish we lived in Kent and could rent/buy/move this from the citizens. We have moved (2) early 1800's buildings and rebuilt them, but they were in 10% of the condition this gem is. Gotta love Greek Revival style.
Even Hiram College is beginning to reconstruct a church that was moved from Mecca, OH. Historically it mirrors the original church structure in the village. Too Cool.

Awsome video! Good music choice! Sure will be odd not to see the church any more.

Excuse me, I thought that the citizens of Kent owned the library. I seem to recall that a levy was passed to build the new library.
If the church building is usable, it would be idiotic to tear it down. What is the library proposing in its place? A parking lot? Surely, this is something that should be decided with input from the community (and by that, I do not mean only the west river neighborhood. The rest of us paid for the new library, and should have a say in how it disposes of 'excess' property.) From its appearance in the video, this is a building that could cost a million dollars or more to replace - if it could be replaced. If the community cannot figure out a use that would justify the of upkeep, it should be offered for sale to be used for commercial purposes: a restaurant, banquet hall, dance studio, gallery space or theater, or to house small shops or offices. The one resource that Kent has, or should have, is old buildings with character, which could be used for creative or profitable ventures, if reasonable rents could be charged. Surely such an investment by the city would be no more costly than would a sweetheart deal to subsidize conversion of the church into unneeded office space while destroying the character of the building...or parking lots.

The library bought it, they should be allowed to do what they want with it.

I am surprised at how intact this church is . I have enjoyed seeing it for many years and driving past. I truly believe the library board is only looking after their "land that could be available to them", and not the structures in Kent that need to be preserved. I do not think it needs to be demolished. If not used as a church it could be used as something else for the community.
