Elect new Waterloo board members

I had the opportunity to hear the candidates up for Waterloo school board. As far as I'm concerned only three presented themselves to be worthy of a vote. The incumbents avoided directly answering the questions that were asked of them. One even completely changed his answer when asked the same question. One candidate is very unsportsmanlike (vulgar language is never acceptable at any school event) and flies off the handle much too quickly. Is this who we want to represent us? The board members need to remember who their boss is - the taxpayers/parents. Everyone needs to get out and vote tomorrow. Our school and students deserve the best and change is strongly needed to accomplish this endeavor.

lots of negative comments on here-

The school board meeting was last night, only approx 7 parents attended. Only one School board candidate attended that did not win a position.

I am so sick of hearing people bash the waterloo schools and then when it comes to voting day nothing gets done! Pusateri must be doing something right if he keeps on getting elected. As for the new ne voted in, give her a chance, she may surprise you. Le the parents stop arguing and put their energy towards focusing on the kids.

My opinion is that the negativity that is pushed upon the group that comes to the meetings, asks questions and such it 100% wrong. They ask, they do not receive answers of any kind and yet they are perceived as negative.

I could not agree more with ammaeuswalk about the new board member. Let her have the chance to do what the community elected her to do. However, (and these are my feelings) threatening to pull out our kids from the WSD is not the answer. If that is what you decide is best for your child then well that is your decision. I as well as many of you know parents of children that go elsewhere and many have the same complaints but on different issues. The grass is not always greener. The GPA for sports, I agree that these need to be higher however I am going to pick my battles. As parents in our home our child is required to have an A-B average 1- because we know he is capable and 2- because this is our requirement. I don't care what the GPA is at the school this is our rule. I see many parents running from one extra activity to another all week long, night after night. But then complain that the school is not giving their child enough help within the classroom. You are the parent, it starts at home, if a child does not perform in the classroom then they do not get awarded with these activities. (period!)
I do agree however that the community needs to be heard and respected and in turn we need to show the same to SB members. I think some community members and board members are now in a "who is right" fight that will go on and on. Most of these posts prove my point, the mud slinging is unreal. I have discussed these issues with some SB members adult to adult, I do not agree with the disrespect that does occur during these meetings. I will go tonight and hope to see an improvement and a productive meeting. I will not just focus on negativity, yes there are items that need to change- but we have a good school with good teachers, coaches and staff and to be honest all of this negativity is becoming very tiresome. These are my opinions.

Folks -- I see some negative comments posted about the new school board member. That is a path that we as a community should not go down. Give her a chance. No one should sling mud. No one should attack anyone's credibility. However, many have found that attending board meetings does not help and many feel that the community is not listened to. It is time for everyone to stop complaining and just show our desires by placing our children in schools that are at the cutting edge of education. There are many options, including open enrollment (free), private schools, etc... Just look around at the other public schools -- you will be amazed at what is offered. We can also show our displeasure on a levy vote that could be coming up shortly. These are the only things that will finally get the attention of the board and administration. We have a great community and our schools are just a small part of it. In no way do I want to see the demise of Waterloo schools. However, it is up to every parent to make sure that their child gets the best education possible, no matter where that may be. Let's stop the complaining and do what is best for our children.

Yes you can contact the Ohio Board of Education and also the Attorney Generals office. However you need to have documentation of specific sunshine laws that have not been followed. They will not care that so and so rolled his eyes or that some SB members do not like another one. Or that our super sits with his back towards the public attendees. GET the 2009 Current Version of the Ohio Sunshine laws (currently on line-pdf version)and read them. Does anyone know when the next SB meeting is?

Chequers1 -- I really don't know much about the new board member and I will definitely give her the benefit of the doubt that she will do the right thing for Waterloo. She may not know much about Waterloo, but if she truly cares about the education of the kids she will do the right thing. I was at one of the candidates nights and she said that she wants to start college-preparatory classes at Waterloo since we don't have any. Hopefully she will not become just a puppet like other board members have become. In any case, the mud-slinging (and the newest board member seemed to run a clean campaign while others did not) and defamatory remarks have caused me to finally give up all hope that this board truly cares about the best education for our children. I love this area and will remain, but my kids will no longer attend the Waterloo schools. Maybe Waterloo can merge with another district and our problems would be solved. Our board and administration are guiding us to the brink of disaster.

stryker - we can contact the State Board of Education... the more we do the more attention we will get. It is truly out of control here.

If you are @ the SB meeting Thursday, lets talk.

weWantChange - you definitely reflect some of my own feelings. I for one am active in the school and attend the SB meetings and campaigned for my candidates (who did not make it on) this election. I, for one, would NEVER sling at another candidate except for to point out facts.

I am truly sad for Mrs. Bolanz who lost her seat to a person who knows nothing about this school and whose reason for running was prompted by another incumbent school board member. I also heard the rumors but for those of you who think that those of us who attend the school board meetings, ask questions and tell the community the facts - i will say that the "I HATE WATERLOO GROUP" as we have been so named, is anything but.

Just remember, administrators, as kids walk out the door to other districts, NOTHING ever worth having EVER comes EASY. Its fine time that this school board and the administrators realize that they can continue down the road they are on and it will not be a good one. You may have won the election Mr. Pusateri and Mrs. Whittlesey but the same people who may have voted for you will also vote "NO" for a levy. What will that say?
