Well let's ponder this for a moment and this is at this time a theory, speculation or hypothesis. It may be close to being accurate, specially the cost of the computers while other parts are conjecture.
First let's look at what we are paying now. We have desktop computers in the district that are antiquated with CRT (cathode ray tubes, look like TV's), monitors and on average those units draw around 700 watts to operate (base systems can use from 300 watts to 600 watts depending on the processor, graphics card and so on), while the monitors draw around 300 watts to 450 watts (again the type, size of the monitor) we'll average this to 700 watts of power needed to run the each computer in the district.
We have 1000 computers (approximately), which then are drawing 700,000 watts of power to operate. Impressive. That's a lot of power.
Now if we go out to bid with several manufacturers, we can probably get a good price on Netbook and Notebook computers (now tech guys, I know the keyboards are small but I would recommend you use a conventional mouse and a plug in USB keyboard, even I hate to type on those little keyboards, however they are great for the students).
Now with 2200 students in the district, we would need 1500 Netbooks for K-8. Now I would not give out netbook computers to the K grade so that would leave me around 150 spare netbooks for those that fail for a variety of reasons.
We have 700 students in the high school and they would receive the Notebook computers that have a little more power.
We go to the manufacturer and we get them to put in bids and this will create a price war among those who would like to sell their systems to the district. We could get netbooks utilizing Solid State hard drives (this means no moving parts in the machine to wear out).
These machines (netbooks), will run for 9 hours on a single battery charge. Most would only be used for 5 hours a day. Once home the student can plug into commercial power while they use it and have the battery recharged for the next day.
Now if we can get a good price on these netbooks, say $250.00 a piece, you would spend $450,000.00 to outfit all the students from grades 1-8.
If we can get a good price on the Notebooks for grades 9-12 for around $450.00 a unit, our cost would be $315,000.
Netbooks and Notebooks to outfit every student from 1-12 would cost us $765,000. This is withing reach. The cost saving of power for the current computers in the district could probably pay for this.
Now lets go back to the wattage the district approximately uses. Remember we are consuming approximately 700,000 watts. Well the netbooks that have 9 hours of battery life will use 0 watts a day of school power. Yes that is zero. They are running on battery and do not consume any power at all.
The Notebook computers will require around 95 watts per machine. 700 units multiplied by 95 watts equals, get this, 66,500 watts of power. We would save 633,500 watts of power daily over what we are currently using. The computers would pay for themselves in a very short period of time.
Now, if we invest in the same software they use at Ecotohio.org and incorporate it into the district (I would guess that may cost us $200,000.00 and I could be way off on this so just suppose), the total cost to us for the computers and software would be $965,000.
Not a bad cost.
Now the software restricts students to the curriculum and the districts browsing restrictions. No Facebook, No YouTube and No Myspace. Computer use is restricted where the students could go for it uses a proxy server to restrict this movement.
All textbooks would be digitized and updated periodically throughout the school year as information is changed. This gives us up to date information the students will be accessing.
We would not have to spend money on textbooks, no student would be without one and every student would now have their own personal tutor both at school and at home.
Could it get any better?
Now computers in this way will not and should not replace teachers. Plus we do not want students working on them constantly throughout the day. They are their to enhance the teachers expertise in teaching, provide the teacher with materials the students can instantly access, open up the students ability to become global giving them the ability to communicate with students in other schools in the U.S. and throughout the world, give them the ability to confer with experts in a wide variety of fields and become part of global learning.
Students will become easier to manage in the district, this will allow us to increase class sizes for much of the tension will be gone in managing larger classes and since the computer is a tutor for all students, we would be able to eliminate virtually all those employee positions. An additional bonus cost savings to the district.
Increasing class sizes also gives us the ability to reduce the size of the teaching Staff and the Administrators.
The computer will provide the ability for children to discuss information they have found in their research and make class a more interactive adventure for all. They would generate excitement in learning.
Children can do their homework right on the system and have it uploaded automatically when the log into the district or be done right on the server. This also will provide the teacher with information as to how long the student actually put into the project assigned and also show teachers the areas where students are struggling or having difficulty understanding a particular course.
Review: savings in power consumption, savings in textbooks, savings in staff, savings in tutors savings in administrators, increased interactivity both nationally and globally, access to experts in particular fields, ability to provide a personal tutor to every student, easier reporting, easier testing, easier accountability and many other items too numerous to mention.
Why are we doing this?
This could probably save a school district 4 to 5 million a year in operating costs. This will give us the ability to provide a higher wage to the lower staff count, and reduce our need for so many administrators.
It will take maybe 2 or 3 years to adapt and fine-tune the process, however, savings can be experienced almost immediately along with at least a 10% to maybe 20% improvement in test scores the first year alone.
So why are we not heading this way? What is the holdup of schools adopting this type of teaching method? We are struggling to obtain funds to support the schools and the economy is not much help at this point.
Within the next few years the district will be at a 10 million dollar deficit and this can be avoided by just computerizing the district. If the technology is here, the pricing is here, and the digital textbooks available why are we practicing education that is cost prohibitive.
Because we are willing to pass levies that give the Administration and School Board a cushion that allows them to avoid moving into the digital age.
The computers will not replace teachers. They will only enhance the teacher's ability to teach. Used properly and productively the children will receive an education like they never have before.
Just a thought.

I have never claimed to be a computer expert. Fact is, there is no such thing as a computer expert. There are those who are more knowledgeable about computers than another, but experts don't exist.
Here's some examples why, One, if they did exist your computer would never lock up do to programming. Two, do you even realize how big the industry itself is? There are thousands of tangents that branch off into the computer field. No one can know every last bit of it. We don't live long enough. Extend our life span say maybe another 500 years, and even that person would know maybe 10% of what you could know.
I never claimed to be proficient at Web Design and that is why I don't do it for a living. Don't want to. There are other things more important and where my focus is that I do not wish to become a web designer. The web site is basically for my own use when testing computers to see how fast the access the web site. I know how long it should take on certain pages, if it takes to long, then it helps to determine where problems are in the machine.
Nice try, Magician, but your post indicates how little you know about the industry and what it can do.
Maybe if you put down the computer magazines and actually got deep in the field you would have known this.
Microsoft, Intel, IBM and the rest all know there is no such thing as an expert. There are those who may be extremely knowledgeable in certain aspects in the field, but experts, I don't see that as being a possiblity in the field.
Intel produces processors, however, they do not really know the potential of their processors through programming. If they did we would have perfect computers. No, Apple computers are not perfect, they only make up 3% of the market for computers and they probably do have viruses but no one writes software to detect it because if you don't have a large enough market you can't make money in it. That is why many Apple programmers came over to the PC market. There's no money in the Apple market to be made.
If Microsoft knew everything about programming, they wouldn't come out with new versions, like Windows 7 (which is what I'm using to write this post), but I have found errors in that version already. I have had if for two months, (remember I am registered with Microsoft and we get many things that the normal consumer doesn't get, and I have been using Windows 7 ever since January of this year, it didn't come out until October 22, 2009).
Again, I am not an expert, will never claim to be and can you give me a few of those URL's you claim the 4 year olds have done? I love to see prodigies in action. But then again, your probably just blowing smoke.
Really would like to see those web pages though!!

Whizzard, you expect anyone to believe you are a computer expert?
I have updated the post concerning Administrative pay in the Streetsboro City School District.
After emailing the Treasurer I was informed that all amounts listed across the chart are paid by the district. The Administrator has none of the figures listed coming out of their pocket so all amounts shown come out of the Taxpayers pocket and the money comes from the General Fund.
I think all residents in Streetsboro should review this report to see what the administration costs the district.
I made it a little easier to read and follow.
As it turns out, the district not the employee pays the Employee Share Retirement Paid by Board which is actually the Taxpayers back pocket.
Thank you all.
Let's all make sure to thank the board for setting up these contracts.

He thought he was signed in but I was. I honestly did not read the whole post. I am not very familiar with all of the things both of you know about computerizing, so I really don't like to give an opinion. I don't like to unless I am knowledgable about the subject. I do use computers and think they are important but I have no idea when it comes to how much everything costs.

Nortons and McAffe both do not work as well as Malwarebytes. Also has a light signature when it is running in the background.
Don't forget to do a full scan to see what has made it's way into your system.

This one is for all who access the RecordPub website.
I have it an it is continually going off when I come here to alert me to a malicious web site trying to access my computer.
You have to pay for it to get it to run in the background to protect your computer. No other spyware on the internet protects you like Malwarebytes does.
No one but no one should be trying to access your system just by using the internet.
It will cost about $29.00 but the protection is sure worth it to protect privacy and to keep these guys from downloading malicious software to your computer and it will save you computer repair expense when things start to go really whooey.

forthekids,
Have your spouse get their own screen name. I think those postings were unfair to you. Unless you feel your spouse was speaking for you, then that's another story.
My spouse doesn't always agree with what say, not concerning my posts here on the web, but just in life in general outside of these posts. We've been married 36 years and I and her have learned to live with compromises and the fact that we may not always agree on things.
I love my wife more than life itself and just because we don't agree on everything doesn't make either one of us a bad person.
Also, I hope people will vote for Tom Gilmer. Very bright young man with a lot of wisdom.

Forthekids,
#1 - There will be a cost savings.
#2 - When you buy textbooks, you do pay for the paper, you paid the guys to cut down the trees to make the paper, you pay for the paper when the company printing it has to buy the paper, their cost for the paper wasn't free. You only have to pay for updates when the software you are currently using can no longer perform the functions you desire, they have multi-licensing out there for the software if you do upgrade and you don't always have to upgrade that is why many many businesses are still using Office 2000, annual updates are optional. Yes I do believe a 2nd grader can understand how to use a computer, my grandchildren have been using computers since they were 6 months old. Computer equipment costs, well the servers are already in place and the software to help institute this is already in place from places like Ecotohio.org which would most likely sign a contract to let us use their system (at a cost of course) and the software they use is all web based. No cost to our district for implementing the servers and computers you don't think we already have. Streetsboro's IT guy is pretty savvy and we would only need 2 or 3 more techs to help him with the project. Get real on that one.
#3= Sure the class can go from 20 to 30 without a hitch and scores will still jump up higher. Smaller class sizes have not really improved anything and that can be seen by going to the ODE website and creating a spread sheet covering the last five years and all grades and you can see it for yourself. Of course, you would have to know how to use a spreadsheet program. Your comments indicate you are not aware of the potentials or capabilities of computers. That is what I'm getting by your remarks. #4= The district now bases their needs of adminstrators by some article they read in a trade magazine that says they should 1 for every 400 students. The last superintendent stated that in a Board Meeting. That is not state minimum requirements. You do not need as many as we have now. Remember we are trying to reduce costs in the district. #5 - Maybe you should talk with the Districts IT guy. He is a pretty savvy guy. I don't think this would be much of a problem. Sure some computers will be damaged and some will go heywire, but Mr. Cain can surely manage. He is not stupid by any means. #6 - You're kidding about that one I'm sure. No one can be that ignorant. No even going to respond to that one. #7 - did you even read the article I posted before commenting on this. #8 - #9 obviously you aren't reading your own post, that was redundant of #2 above. #10- no I am not making a broad statement, you must have come in late in the game, I have posted numerous links in other posts directing readers to where they can see more information on computerising a school district. This is something I have been studying for the past 10 years and bringing to this districts attention for the past 7 years.
So now let me summarize, you have indicated you are a teacher and it is apparent that you are in a box and have no idea what is going on in the outside world. You choose to chastise people rather than really take a look at what is happening in the real world. You make statements with no conclusive information to back you up. Are you aware that Microsot will be releasing Office 2010 free of charge next year. It will be free to everyone who owns a computer and wants a copy. They are doing it to compete with both Sun and Google. There goes your costs to upgrade the Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Powerpoint software that most all people use. Bet you didn't know that!
It won't cost millions because our district already has the infrastructer need to pull this off in place. Sorry, there goes the other millions you think this will cost us.
No I am not a bitter old fool and my logic works. With the cost savings the district would realize, we wouldn't need a levy at all for quite a few years. I do know the facts whether you believe it or not. What really scares me is that we have closed minded, self promoting teachers such as yourself being around children. We need to expand their minds not constrict it like you seem to want to do. There have been many people who post who I consider having a high intellect and they all seem to agree we need to get students into the digital age. Maybe your business has paid a lot into computers, however, the equipment I have put into place has required very little support on hardware and a minimal amount concerning the software. Maybe you need a better IT department. But it is truly obvious you have NO idea as to what you are talking about.
No you have said you were a teacher and now you say your not. So how can we believe anything you post.
You probably should not let anyone know you have a business and financial background. Especially if they know who you are by your screen name which you are afraid to give for you know many would think differently of you.
Good luck with the ancient world you are living in.
