As community member and taxpayer I am concerned about the growing animosity between the Field teachers and Field administration, specifically some of the comments being made in recent sound off columns. Many thoughts come to mind; the most obvious being there is ignorance to the facts, in and around the district. Webster's dictionary defines ignorance as a, "lack of knowledge, education, or awareness." Let me try to help clarify a few misconceptions.
First, no teacher in the state of Ohio receives an annual raise, unless it is negotiated into his or her contracts. A common myth that exists is that teachers receive annual raises called "steps" up to fifteen years, where there after, longevity kicks in. Here is the fact about these so-called raises. It is a law in the state of Ohio that a teacher's salary increases proportionally to their base pay. The reasons for this law is to gradually bring the annual salary income of a teacher up to the level of a professional college graduate. One has to understand teachers are paid by the taxes of local citizens within the district, therefore it would be impossible to pay a teacher their just wage out of college, because it would break a district's economy. Realizing this the state of Ohio implemented a plan to gradually increase the pay of teachers to a respected professional level like say an engineer, lawyer, or any other professional job. However, teachers will never reach the monetary heights of other professions, which is fine, but hearing citizens, with no conception of the profession, verbalize false statements about teaching, is daily a struggle every teacher faces.
Secondly, how many people reading this have a job that requires them to further their college education annually at their own expense? Teachers are required to either begin or receive a master's degree within the first ten years of graduating college. Do you know who pays for this, the teacher. In other professions you have a choice as to whether you want to further your education. Some districts do offer tuition reimbursement, but if one works in a district like Field Local Schools the reimbursement may barely be enough to cover book fees! The only viable recourse for a teacher to afford a master's degree is to do a little each year, spreading the cost. When is this master's program most likely to be done? During the summer when many people think teachers are on an exotic beach sipping pina coladas or buying new cars, or big screen TVs or God forbid, watching their cable television. Instead of indulging themselves in, well, self indulgence, they are becoming better educators for three groups of people, the children, the district, and the citizens within the district.
If you're still a skeptic I have several suggestions. First, contact your board of education and offer some of your time to shadow or help a teacher within the district so you can see what the job truly entails. Don't judge the entire profession by ignorance. Second, there are always going to be people who will never be convinced no matter what is fact or what is simply untrue. These people are not interested in truth. They simply want to stir the pot and cause trouble. Don't be someone that passes on misinformation because it's "what you heard". Go to board meetings and community events. Become informed so that the information you pass on is accurate and when you go to the polls to vote or you hear rumors circulating, you can make informed choices and comments. Third, ask the administration if they agreed, during these tough economic times, to forgo their pay raises and/or any bonus compensation in order to help the bottom line of this school district. This would require integrity and we surely hope these are the kind of people we have put in these positions. Our community needs to ask serious questions about whom we are putting into leadership roles in this district and that starts at electing qualified people to fill our school board. Please be informed before the upcoming election.
I am not a teacher but an informed taxpayer who knows many teachers in our district. I know how hard they work and how freely they give of their time and talents during the school days, after hours and summers. I have a great deal of respect for their dedication, which we all should. We, as a community, need to step up and support our teachers instead of dragging them down. They do not deserve the tongue-lashing they are receiving. The do deserve to be compensated and respected for their contribution to our community and our children.

The orange shirts are an eye sore and totally ridiculous. A lot of the teachers are refusing to wear them. What purpose do they serve. The administration is aware of what the teachers are asking for and vice versa. Get rid of the shirts. And for the record, some teachers are absolutely talking about the shirts in the classroom. I know this from personal experience. Extremely unprofessional.

I think we are off track. The article said teachers aren't respected, and the community needs to start supporting them and the schools. Not being able to afford an increase in our taxes how nothing to do with respecting the teachers. It has to do with not promising to pay for something we can't afford. There really are people that have to choose between paying their heating bill vs increasing their taxes. Alot of Field residents are barely getting by. Just look at the number of kids on free or reduced lunches. Those of us lucky enough to still have a job, we also struggle with bad contracts, and benefits being taken away. Do they feel bad for us? If the administrators took a raise, that is wrong. Just look at the mortgage people getting bailout money and taking huge bonuses. But it doesn't mean 2 wrongs will make it right.

Believe it or not, most of us have always supported our teachers and would love to give our students everything they deserve. (especially a new track!) Teaching is an honorable profession, that makes a decent wage. It's not a ton, but it doesn't "suck" either. I just think they are so fed up with the administration that "some" are running their mouths too much to the students. No, the students don't care about the shirt other than they are sick of seeing orange every Friday. I'm just wondering, exactly what is the point of wearing them? After all, they spend the entire day with the students, not the administration and voters.

I agree with tfrancis6. Everyone will have to see what happens with the new school board. But no matter who is on the board, they can't promise to spend money they don't have, and I agree the future of this country is too unpredictable to make any promises.

Well we have some new board members. I hope they consider the future of the school when they are negotiating contracts with the teachers. Simple economics tells us that spending what you don't have only creates bigger problems later. Look at the financial crisis we are still going through. You reap what you sow, more than you sow, and later than you sow.
The board needs to consider the consequences of giving raises or benefits to the teachers in a new contract. If the community didn't pass a levy that asks for additional funds should we increase our expenses? What happens if we give the teachers raises and benefits that create expenses for the school and then this recession is prolonged over several more years? Will the community be able to give in the future? Nobody knows the answers to this question! I would hate to see teachers being cut and classroom sizes getting larger because the budget of the school cannot account for the teachers expenses. As for the children making decisions about their futures - I suggest parents and teachers suggest that they do what they love and to love what they do - "Life is Good". I believe the money will be there if they work hard and use the skills they have been given. I just hope the school helps to prepare the children to be a contribution to society. I hope the children are given an opportunity from the community and the staff at the school (THAT INCLUDES OUR SCHOOL BOARD).

So teachers are not allowed to have opinions? If a student asks a question about a profession are the teachers not allowed to voice their view on pay? We tell our kids to become doctors and lawyers to make good money. It's a known fact that teachers everywhere do not make great money. If you have a student that is distracted by a tee shirt then that's a problem. Especially in the upper grades. It's a shirt for goodness sake. You are probably the kind of parent that will sue the school for any little reason that makes you upset. Get a grip. If you read my past posts you would see that I welcome other views and spirited debates. I don't think the teachers are mad at the tax payers. They are upset at the treatment from the board and the administration. Call the superintendent and find out how many grievences were filed last year. How many were found in the superintendents favor? None. Does that tell you there's a problem? Fair and equitable contract. That's what the shirts say and that's what they want. It goes way deeper than just pay.

Anger issues? Typical response if someone has a different opinion. I specifically said "all personnel" call off alot. Much more than personnel a generation ago did when they also were parents with appointments. Yes, the shirts are ridiculous. I don't have a problem wearing them to a school board meeting because that is who the gripe is with. The school dress code says nothing should be worn that causes a distraction in the classroom. I guess that rule only applies to the students. The kids have nothing to do with this, and believe me there are plenty of teachers discussing this with students in the upper buildings. I have no problem with teachers trying to get what's best for them. I do have a problem with them treating taxpayers like uncaring people, and bad mouthing us and the profession to the students. It's ridiculous to tell a girl to never become a teacher because the pay sucks, and that is exactly what happened in one of our buildings.

Wow do you have some anger issues. Did you ever stop to think that many of the teachers are moms who might need to take off when their kids are sick. Maybe they have doctor's appointments. Ask any teacher and I bet they tell you it's more work to make sub plans and come back to work after a sub then what it's worth to take a day off.Why not be supportive that the district is doing something proactive to increase attendance instead of knocking it. Are you that easily offended that a orange tee shirt bothers you that much? The teachers are not to be discussing it with the children at all. Elementary children for sure wouldn't understand it anyways.

I'm so tired of hearing that is we don't pay more, we don't respect the teachers. Why is it so hard for everyone to believe that people have no extra money. Period! They obviously don't care if we are getting paid our fair share at our jobs. Now suddenly we should feel bad for them. I know people that have gone 8 years without a raise. It sucks, but they still have jobs. Some people would love to give the teachers a raise, but they can't get money from a pile they don't have. It's an easy mathematical equation. You can't spend money you DON'T HAVE! Trust me, I would love to make more. But my small paycheck is still better than no paycheck. It has nothing to do with respecting or not respecting the teachers. Do the teachers have any respect for the taxpayers. NO, we are called selfish uncaring taxpayers if we can't support more for them, no matter what the reason behind it is. I also agree there are way too many subs in those buildings everyday. It's crazy how many personnel in all areas call off work. Maybe that's why they now have attendance awards per building. Maybe they should leave the benefits alone and get rid all all these sick days and personal days. No matter what, the teachers need to start respecting our kids. Quit bringing your contract gripes to the classrooms. I'm tired of them telling the students how bad they have it, and how terrible their parents are for not supporting them. The students have NOTHING to do with this and the teachers are using them as pawns. Wearing protest shirts to school and teaching in them is the most UNPROFESSIONAL thing I've ever seen. It saddens me that educators are bringing this to the classrooms. POOR LESSON PLAN!
