Outraged by GHS Administration

I've always believed the Garrettsville school district to be an excellent one. Not only do we have great educators and support staff that are willing to go above and beyond to help or children, but the entire administration has always had the welfare of our kids and community at the forefront of the daily tasks and duties of operating our schools on such a high level.

I can't help but wonder why so many things that I would concider inappropriate for a high school are happening this year! Our new principal (this is only his second year at GHS) didn't allow any parents to chapperone the Homecoming dance this year. He only wanted faculty members as chaperones. This would be fine if there were enough chaperones present, but only five faculty members and one spouse were there that I know of. Not quite enough adult supervision for close to 400 kids! No wonder the punch that was being served got spiked! Which is worse people-the fact that the punch got spiked or the fact the the principal did nothing about it? No police officers were called and neither were any parents. Once it was discovered it was quickly thrown out and another batch of punch quickly took its place. Anyone that bothered to question about the rumors of the punch on the following Monday were quickly told that the rumors weren't true. Why take chances? How could the principal not do anything? Glad my child wasn't driving home that nite!

I guess that the Mardi Gras themed Homecoming was such a success at promoting the party attidude that a new fundraiser is in the works. Our wonderful principal thinks it is okay for our kids to pay to participate in Jello Wrestling to raise money for some of our school associated groups. I am totally appalled at the thought of this. Why not just load all of our kids up on the buses and take them downtown to Slim and Jumbo's or one of the other local bars in town and let them all party for a few hours? At least that way we would know that they would have safe transportation. How can a reasonably intelligent, educated individual even invision this being age appropriate?

People of this community need to call and voice their opinions and outrage not only to Mr. Malmisur (high school principal), but also to Mr. Klamer (school superintendant), and current members of the school board. There's nothing wrong with our kids having a good time, but some things should not be allowed in a high school environment.

To the last comment- It was not "Windham Trash Day". It was spirit week just like what most schools do for homecoming. The week consisted of days such as "senior citizen day" "dress like the opposite sex day" "halloween/ghs spirit day". The "windham trash day" was really trsh/duct tape day. Students who participated in this particular day were to make their outfits out of recycled materials and/or duct tape. This has nothing to do with Windham except for the fact that the whole spirit week was to raise school spirit for the rivalry game. I am sorry that you were misled into believing that the administration would okay days like "windham trash day". You should look into your stories a little more before making accusations like this.

Well I know this post doesn't have anything to do with what happen at Homecoming dance, But I too am upset with the GHS Administration it has come to my attention that they allowed a group of kids to have a Windham(trash) Day at school, this is utterly ridiculous, What School administration and parents would allow such a thing ,I know Windham & Garrettsville have a big rivalry but never would our Administration allow such low class shenanigans, It is one of the most classless acts of all, All I can say is we may have some trash in our town but at least we have a little class more than I can say for GHS...... Bomber 4 life proud and true..............

So what if it was not published! And second I am one of the last people to ever become a Klamer cheerleader, I have had my problemns with him in the past and probably in the future he has a way of screwing things up! (to a point where it harms the kids)!

I think that the fact this story made it in the paper is a shame! I graduated from GHS more than ten years ago but still VERY PROUD of my school! My class enjoyed Homecoming week and all the fun activities that we were able to be a part of...I will never forget "spirit week" it was the best now its a little different than I remember, but still I always painted my clothes with black and gold hair and face matched also. As I got older and could drive we decorated our cars what fun it was, but I can tell you are Homecoming dance brought tears, tears of sadness we lost classmates, friends and it was horrible! I can say also though that at our dances there were chaperones that were parents or whoever voluntereed to help out. I dont feel bashing the school or the kids is going to help. Its over no-one was hurt or worse and now find a solution to resolve this problemn so that next time everyone agrees and is happy! The point of Homecoming was always to be fun I sure spent enough on dresses and such dont run our school's name in the dirt just resolve the problemn and be glad no kids were hurt from the spiked punch whether it was or not! G-Men pride ALWAYS!

No you are right no one is disputing the excellent school rating. Only bashing the staff and school board for the excellent job they do everyday to help give our schools an excellent school rating. As my son said, the kids could not have done that on their own, it is because of the staff we are lucky enough to have that help make this possible.

I have two sons at the high school. One is a junior & the other a senior. They are very proud of their school and district. When I showed them the letter that ran in the paper they were outraged by it. Firstly, both said that the "spiked" punch was just a joke/rumor that started because the punch was so terrible. Secondly, they want if you trust your own child at a dance since the chaperones are the same staff that you intrust your child to everyday.
We are talking about high school students, young adults. I don't think that they need mommy and daddy there watching over them. Besides parents probably should be more aware of what goes on before or after the dance, then what is happening during the dance itself.
The reason our high school has had an excellent rating for 6 consectutive years is because of the excellent, caring staff we have at the high school - from Mr. Klamer all the way to the janitors - the staff cares for the students and the school district!
