Ruth K. Smith, 54, of Kent, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a difficult but determined battle against cancer. She was born April 11, 1955 in Bowling Green, Ohio to Robert G and Shirley S (Coen) Knestrict. She was employed as Public Relations Coordinator for the School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University. She loved her job and felt blessed to work with a wonderful group of colleagues and friends. She was a graduate of Lakewood High School (1973) and Bowling Green State University (1977). Faith, family, friends, and a passion for music and writing formed the foundation of her life. She was a member of United Church of Christ of Kent; and a past member of the Presbyterian Community Church of Pleasanton, California, Village Presbyterian Church of Tampa, Florida, and Lakewood Presbyterian Church in Lakewood, Ohio. Ruth loved to sing, and she lent her beautiful voice to choirs and community choral associations during high school, college, and throughout her adult life. She was an avid reader and a gifted writer who recently published a collection of her essays, entitled Laura’s Mom Learns, about her experiences in raising her daughter, Laura, a child with disabilities, who is the love of her life. She is survived by her husband, David E. Smith, whom she married on November 30, 1985; daughter, Laura Grace Smith of Kent; mother, Shirley Knestrict of Westlake; brother, Thomas D. (Christine) Knestrict of Mason; and sister, Karen S. (Dean) Dorrell of Washington, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert G. Knestrict. Memorial services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 11th at United Church of Christ of Kent with Rev. David Pattee and Rev. Heather C. Wicks officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to RMH Foundation-Visiting Nurse-Hospice, POB 1204, Ravenna, OH 44266-1204. Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory are handling the arrangements.
