The October meeting of the Windham Friday Club was held at the home of Bonnie Oliver with Maureen See as co-hostess. Following a Halloween buffet, a business meeting was held. Members decided to make a $25 donation to the Windham United Methodist Church in memory of Richard Sands, husband of longtime club member Louise Sands. New officers were elected for 2010: Pam Cree, president; Pegge Petkovic, vice president; Helena Belden, secretary; and Pat Clayton, treasurer. The evening's program was presented by Maureen See and was a brief history of Halloween, from the Celtic festival at the end of summer, to the later addition of Roman and Christian influences. Each successive ethnic group contributed to the evolution of the contemporary Trick-or-Treat rituals. Members all then made masks to "scare away" the ghosts or spirits in the traditions of early days. Door prizes were won by Pat Clayton and Pam Cree, who each received a patchwork wallet. The next meeting will be on Nov. 20 at the home of Suzanne Evitts with Jodi Woolf as the co-hostess. Comments
