An early morning fire caused extensive damage to a house at 605 Crain Avenue on Sunday, where a party was taking place.
Lt. Bill Myers of the Kent Fire Department said nobody was injured, but the residents of the house have been sheltered by the American Red Cross.
“The house is not livable,” he said. “There was extensive damage fire damage throughout the whole house. It was well advanced upon our arrival.”
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Firefighters were called to the house at 4:31 a.m. Initially, there were reports of people trapped in the house, but those reports proved to be false.
Frank Smith is the owner of the rental property.
Myers said Lt. David Moore was the initial commander at the scene and eventually, Chief James Williams oversaw the firefighting efforts.
Mutual aid was provided by the Streetsboro, Stow, Ravenna, Ravenna Township, Mantua and Aurora fire departments.

First, the Red Cross is not housing the family. They only offered a gift card so I'm not sure where the Record Pub is getting there information from.
Second, I'm not sure what anyone means by all the people living in the house. There was a woman and her daughter and the womans brother, whom she has been apart of raising since their mother died 8 years ago at the young age of 41. He just turned 18 and while his sister works, he provides child care for his niece. That certainly does not qualify as a multi family home. It was just one family.
Third- All people that live in Kent pay taxes, renters do not directly pay them but by paying their rent monthly all of those fees include but I'm sure are not limited to insurance costs, taxes and house payment for the owner or income for the owner. So just because you don't own a home, doesn't mean that your not paying for the taxes.
This resident lived there for 3 years, so this wasn't someone just passing by she wanted to make a home in Kent and purchase a home eventually herself.
I'm sure that their is corruption in Kent, it is unfortunate but it's every where.
By the way, I only blog and comment on things I know. An opinion isn't worth the brain that processed it if there isn't any validity to it. Lets all be an informative community.
God Bless.
ps, I apologize for any spelling errors in advance.

The city of kent hired a code enforcement officer.
Rentals were to be his only job.
Tax payer dollars and Eric Fink for a city attorney.
Not a good combination.
Check it out, his track record and property useage suck.

I guess everyone is FINALLY realizing that 1/2 the rentals in Kent are zoned for single families and yet any one can tell ya that quite a few people lived in this houde who were unrelated, as is true all over the city--where are the inspectors??? Oh I KNOW--bothering house owners who live and breathe and pay their taxes!!!!

According to the Portage County website, the property is not zoned as multi-family. It is zoned as a 510 single family dwelling.
