Judge Sheila G. Farmer, president of the Ohio Judicial Conference and presiding judge on the Fifth District Court of Appeals, was the recipient of the sixth “Lex Christi” Award on Thursday.

The award was established in 1998 to recognize an exemplary man or woman in the legal profession for commitment to the high ideals of that profession and the needs of the local community. The title, Lex Christi, refers to the law of Christ, which reveals God’s standard of truth and justice for the well-being of the human family.

The award was presented at a luncheon following the Thirteenth Annual Red Mass, celebrated by Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of Youngstown. Bishop David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, was homilist.

Farmer serves on the board of directors of Walsh University in Canton, and has served on that Board for eight years. Farmer served 10 years on the Mercy Medical Center Board from about 1983-1992; and was a 20-year member of the Service League of Mercy Hospital.  She served on the Finance Board of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary from approximately 1986-1992. During the 1980’s Judge Farmer served on the Bishop’s Synod on Women in the Church and on a special advisory bBoard to the Bishop for the Establishment of Regulations for Reporting Child Abuse in Schools.

She was on the Parents’ Council of St. Mary’s School, and the Central Catholic High School Advisory Board and  Foundation.

Farmer has been a jurist for 30 years. She has been Education Chair for the Ohio Judicial Conference, Chair of the Public Confidence in the Courts Committee, and a member of the Ohio Supreme Court’s Gender Bias Task Force. Her community involvement, in addition to Catholic-based institutions, included the Girl Scouts on the Great Trail Council, the Humane Society of Stark County, and the Rotary Club of Canton.
