Alma Jean Givens, 78, passed away June 25, 2009. Born August 1, 1930 in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Worthy and Effie (Valentine) Springston. A graduate of Edinburg High School, Class of 1949, she lived in Edinburg until moving to Cincinnati in 1966. Upon her late husband’s retirement in 1988 they moved to Rootstown. Alma Jean was married to Wilfred M. "Whitey" Givens until his passing on January 11, 2006. She was employed at Sears while living in Cincinnati, baked and decorated special occasion cakes, volunteered at Southeast Schools and at Camp Quality Ohio, a special needs camp for children with cancer. An active member of the Akron Community of Christ Church, she held the priesthood office of Teacher. One of her "greatest joys" was caring for children, especially her great- grandchildren. She enjoyed flowers, the beauty of all nature, canning vegetables and fruits, and listening to music. Many lives were touched by her joy of sending greeting cards for all occasions. Her life revolved around her faith and family. She measured her wealth not by material things but by the things in her heart. The blessing of her life inspired and taught us faith, strength, grace and the art of giving. Alma Jean will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her two daughters, Sandra Jean (Kelly) Westover of Deerfield and Flora May (James) Rudolf of Randolph; two grandchildren Brent (Monica) Westover of Edinburg and Alisa (Matthew) Huebner of Rootstown; five great grandchildren: Breanna and Gracie Jean Westover; Ava, Alaina, and Michael Huebner; adopted granddaughter Michele (Jeff) Baumgarth and children Casey, Kelly, and Cooper of Cincinnati; sisters Anna Phillips of Tallmadge and Mary Lou (Charles) Johnson of Edinburg; sister and brother-in-laws Barbara Springston of Rootstown; Russell (Marie) Givens of Elizabeth, W.VA.; Joan Bauer of Tarpon Springs, Fl., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband, Wilfred, her parents, brother Charles Springston, sister Sylvia Springston, and brother-in- law Robert Phillips. Family will receive visitors on Monday, June 29, from 5 PM until 8 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 30, at 11 AM with High Priest Blake Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Edinburg Cemetery. Her wishes were for memorials to be sent to Community of Christ Church, Givens Memorial Youth Fund, 1587 W. Exchange St., Akron, Oh. 44313. Please share your memories at www.mem.com.
