Two firefighters were sent to the hospital with minor injuries Friday after a fire broke out on the second floor of an East Riddle Avenue home in Ravenna just after 4:30 p.m.
Firefighters from four departments battled the blaze at 110 E. Riddle Ave. and extinguished the flames in less than 20 minutes.
Two Ravenna firefighters were injured after climbing the stairs to battle the blaze, when large chunks of ceiling debris fell on top of them, sending them to Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna Fire Chief Geoffrey Cleveland said.
"When they left, they were in stable condition," he said, declining to give their names.
No other injuries were reported. The sole occupant of the home at the time was able to escape without harm.
Cleveland said while the blaze is under investigation, it is believed the fire was caused by an electrical problem in the crawl space of an upstairs bedroom.
More than 20 onlookers, some on the roof of a nearby building, gathered to watch the blaze, as flames and black smoke shot through the roof. Traffic slowed on nearby Main Street, where motorists tried to get a glimpse of the fire.
Fire departments from Ravenna, Ravenna Township, Rootstown and Kent responded.
The Ravenna Police Department closed Riddle Avenue between Prospect and Chestnut streets for several hours Friday.
"I think the interior crews did a great job extinguishing the flames before they extended further. It could have been a total loss," Cleveland said.

Okay. You all can stop you're ignorant comments. That's my house you happen tp be arguing over. NONE of you have the slightest clue what happened. Just becuase it came through only part of the roof doesn't mean it didn't go through the rest of the house. I have lost everything just becuase of what the fire didn't get, the water it took to put the fire out did. I'm the 18 year old daughter, and i happened to have the bedroom in the basement, thatnks for all your damn sympathy considering the basement flooded feet of water. The ceilings on ever floor have fallen through, All the hardwood floors are gone, everything is a total waste. So while you sit there and think of ways to b!tch about my house fire, just think of my four year old brother who lost his entore Thomas the Tank engine themed room. Try explaining to a little kid why they can't go home.
Thank you to all the fire departments who responded and thanks to the red cross, you guys were great.

I think if my house was burning I really wouldn't bit@h about how many fire departments were responding. I really think I would be happy to see 100 fire departments responding and hoping that was going to be enough!!!

Truthtalk, I am not firing shots and I couldn't care less about any of Ravenna's officials. I simply looked at the video of this fire in the extreme upper level of this home and wondered why a fire department of Ravenna's size needed 3 other departments to handle it. Obviously it is Ravenna's policy to request backup for all structure fires if the requested backup on this. I am now longer going to be posting simple questions on here due to some of the moronic responses I get. Have a wonderful day!

apark...I was not being sensative. When one asks a question like "what am I missing", they usually have their mind made up.
Often the blogger types use these forums to snipe government officials and safety forces. Have you spoken with ANY fire official to get your questions answered...or are you depending on others who stir the pot in this forum to provide your information? Anonymity while firing shots is a wonderful thing.
In the safety forces, there is safety in numbers. "Auto-aid" for a structure fire, particularly in smaller communities, is the standard procedure.

Little bit sensitive Truthtalk? I was simply asking a question. I've seen some of your comments on articles before, and I can assure you that I am not the one missing something. However, mysterious guest, thank you for your positive, resourceful response.

To answer the question that was asked... The reason there were 4 departments, Ravenna City included, at a fire in the city of Ravenna is that there are currently Mutual-aid and Automatic-aid agreements in place for all of these muincipalities. They all agree to "help each other out" when there is an emergency, because most of them could not afford to staff every truck full-time, around-the-clock. If someone wants to talk about tax burden, I'm sure THAT would be a significant one. There is no cost to the tax payers due to these agreements because the assumption is that the "aid" may be needed in one of these other communities at some point. As to the question that was meant to be asked... Why do they need 4 departments to put out what appears, to the untrained observer, to be a small fire. I don't have an answer for that, but there are a couple of possible explainations. For those that don't know, there are alot of jobs that need done on a fire scene; not just putting out the fire itself. I commend those who feel it is neccessary to control fire spread, but you still have only gotten two of the at least 10 jobs I can think of on a fire scene. And, I am not talking about getting the coffee and water passed out. (Thanks to the Red Cross for the support!) That being said, if you have questions related to the practices of the fire department or of the fire service in general, please contact your local fire department or better yet take a firefighter certifation class and become a firefighter. Either way you shouldn't start rumors about taxes or air it like dirty laundry on a public site like this. Thank you for the service to all the firefighters who responded and get well soon to the firefighters who were injured. Be Safe Out There, This Could Be The One.

Hmm, Apark1 stated: What am I missing? Why were 3 other departments needed for this fire?
They were asking a simple question and what they got was ignorance at it's best.
I would like to know why 3 units from different cities came as well!
Considering who gets the bill DUH, Ravenna gets the bill for requesting back up. So therefore, the taxpayers get it in the end.
Geez, they just asked a simple question a simple answer would have been good.
