Ravenna aims to streamline social media presence

The city of Ravenna will be limiting its Facebook presence after learning that there are multiple Facebook accounts for the city.

Robert Wain, the city's IT director, approached City Council recently to let members know about the upcoming change.

Wain said he learned that the city has at least six Facebook pages. It's not clear if those pages were set up by former employees or others.

He said there is one page for City Park of Dreams, one for the Parks and Recreation Department, and one for the Ravenna Athletic Center. There are also pages set up for the police and fire unions.

When Elaine VanHoose, parks and recreation director, and Leslee Keegan, programming coordinator, were dismissed from their positions, Wain noticed negative posts on the "city" pages.

Wain said he's not sure if those pages were started by city representatives, or if they are rogue pages.

"It's kind of a mess," he said. "We want to reign that in."

He said the city will establish one Facebook presence, with links to the city's web page.

Council members said that while the city may establish one Facebook page, that may not stop the other pages.

"You can't stop them," Councilman Scott Rainone said. "It becomes a freedom of speech issue."
