The Portage County Safe Communities coalition will kick off the annual "Click it or Ticket" campaign from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Aurora Farms Premium Outlets on South Chillicothe Road in Aurora.
Educational materials, free giveaway items and activities for adults and children are part of the event. Police K-9 demonstrations are scheduled at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and the "Saved by the Belt Awards" will be presented at 1:30 p.m., Safe Communities Project Director Lynette Blasiman said.
The event will promote public awareness of the zero-tolerance seatbelt awareness campaign, which includes increased enforcement and public education. Local and state law enforcement will be cracking down on seat belt violations between May 22 and June 4, and aggressive enforcement will be visible throughout the campaign, including night time hours of 6 p.m. through 5:59 a.m. due to the significant number of violations and fatal crashes during that time period.
According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 88 percent of passenger vehicle occupants were buckled up in 2015, but almost 50 percent of occupants in fatal crashes were not.
