The Community Action Council of Portage County is continuing to take appointments for emergency utility assistance under the Home Energy Assistance Program Winter Crisis Program.
Any family or individual can call the agency at 330-297-1456 to schedule an appointment, which are usually scheduled one to three weeks in advance.
CAC also offers walk-in services for customers whose utility services have been turned off or who cannot get an appointment on Tuesday and Thursdays between 8 and 11:30 a.m.
Walk-in scheduling is determined on a first-come, first-served basis and CAC usually takes the first 18 customers.
Residents can also visit the agency's HEAP Satellite Centers located in Kent at 1115 Franklin Ave. on Mondays between 9 and 11 a.m., and in Windham at the Renaissance Family Center, 9005 Wilverne on Fridays between 9 and 11 a.m.
Appointments are not required at the Kent and Windham offices.
Since Nov. 1 when the program began, CAC has helped over 1,100 families.
For eligible clients, E-HEAP will cover the following:
Pay up to $175 for people whose utility service has been disconnected or needs to be transferred.
Pay up to $175 for people with a disconnection notice from their gas and/or electric utility company.
Pay up to $750 to fill a tank for people who have less than a 25 percent supply of bulk fuel (propane or fuel oil);
Pay up to $350 for customers who heat with wood or coal.
Customers must be income eligible and be below 200 percent of the poverty level, and provide documentation of income and household size.
For a household of four, the three-month income must not exceed $11,525 or $46,100 for a 12-month income.
