As demolition continues on old Ravenna High School, the school district is working on a policy on how to distribute the thousands of bricks from the project.
Bill Wisniewski, director of business operations for the Ravenna School District, said they are working on a policy to fulfill requests from the community for a souvenir from the landmark building. The district has some time, since All Excavating of Youngstown isn't expected to start demolition on the original 1921 building for a few more weeks.
Many residents, Wisniewski said, are requesting a brick from the original structure.
"Right now, the only bricks we have are from the Coll Annex," he said, referring to the school's former gymnasium building. Most people who have inquired about bricks want them from the original 1921 structure, which is next on the list for demolition.
Wisniewski said he talked to the demolition company to remind him that several artifacts, such as the original steps, archway and bricks spelling out Ravenna High School must be removed for historical purposes. He said the subcontractor will be visiting the site today to determine how that will be done.
The contractor, he said, mentioned that because a foam ceiling in the Coll Annex was overlooked, the contractor will have to spend a lot of time separating the foam material from the rest of the debris, since it cannot go to the same landfill.
Windows in the original school building also are being removed, as well as window frames and door frames. A ramp also will be constructed at the back of the old gym to remove the old wooden floor, he said.
Once demolition begins on the structure, it will start at the north end, with the old gym being knocked down first. Whittaker Hall will be the last to be torn down.
