Students do battle with their brains Aurora High School takes first, second place at Quiz Bowl

Aurora High School varsity and junior varsity Academic League teams were first-place winners at the Portage County Quiz Bowl Tournament held recently at the Kennedy Center at Hiram College.

Auroras varsity team consisted of Brad Barnes, Adrienne Orlando, Prnuv Sharma and Adam Vana. Competing for the junior varsity team were Mike Bold, Candice Burns, Daphne Chen, Josh Friedman and Will Minton.

The James A. Garfield High School varsity and junior varsity teams took second-place honors at the event. Garfields varsity team was comprised of Mike Brett, Jacob Lawless, David Sheehan and Jake Shilling. Competing for the junior varsity team were Jack Breese, Carolyn Flint, Rena Meadows and Amy Turk.

The day-long event, which also was attended by students from Crestwood, Ravenna, Rootstown, Southeast, Streetsboro and Waterloo high schools, was sponsored by the Portage County Educational Service Center. Students compete in three single elimination rounds in the morning with the winners advancing to the final three rounds of afternoon competition.

Two teams of four players apiece battled each round answering Jeopardy!-style timed questions on topics such as American literature, math, world history, arts and sciences.
