Ravenna nurse doing HIV, hepatitis testing

By Diane Smith | Staff Writer Published:

The nurse with the Ravenna Health Department will be doing some outreach in Portage County in the new year, testing people for diseases such as HIV and hepatitis c.

Sue Mischka is in training now to take over the testing, thanks to a partnership with the Portage County Health Department and a grant received by the Summit County Health Department.

Health Commissioner Joe Fisher said Mischka is in training now to take over the program and learn the most effective way to provide the testing and public education.

"It gets our health department more involved with the community," Fisher said. "And it gets Sue doing the things she is so good at, educating the public."

The testing will begin after the first of the new year and last through 2013.

"We're really excited about it," he said.

Mischka, like all health department employees, is part-time and will be able to increase her hours as a result of the program.

Fisher said it is not clear where the testing will take place. Although the program has been done before, Fisher said, it's not clear whether those locations are still available.
