This is No. 27 on the Record-Courier's list of 30 Things To Do in Portage County.
Take a ride or walk the historic Headwaters Trail
Stretching more than 8 miles across Northern Portage County, the Headwaters Trail extends from Garrettsville in the east to Mantua in the west. A historic route, the trail rest on the spot where Cleveland-Mahoning Railroad once carried passengers from nearby Mantua to Cleveland. Now, as then, the path passes by scenic woodlands, marshes, steep ravines, pristine farmland and even the Cuyahoga River.
Connector trails in the east will take you into downtown Garrettsville for a drink at Cellar Door Coffee Co. or even further into Hiram for a sweet treat at Maggie’s Donuts. The trail is also expected in the future to extend westward along the old rail tracks into Aurora. Until then, make a stop at the Mantua trailhead for an ice cream at the new Chilling Station on the banks of the Cuyahoga.
