Republican Richard Morckel is looking to unseat incumbent Democrat Tim Ryan in Ohio's 13th Congressional District, which covers parts of Trumbull, Mahoning, Stark, Summit and Portage counties
Morckel said he felt it was his constitutional duty to run for office and said he is the best choice in November.
"I do not have good things to say of John Boehner. I'm a natural born U.S. American, a citizen for more than seven years, and a defender of this republic," Morckel said. "There should be no federal funding of abortion and it's much, much better than where we are now."
Morckel said he is anti-abortion except in case of rape or incest and is pro-real marriage between one man and one woman. He's a supporter of states rights and U.S. sovereignty, including supporting a "convention of states."
Morckel said he is against refugee resettlement and a supporter of increased border security, including the Mexican border. He proposes an immediate halting of immigration of Syrian refugees into the U.S.
He also aims to implement minimum requirements for new immigrants to serve in military or hold government jobs.
Morckel is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, as well keeping the military strong and well-funded, boosting aid to veterans. He supports a prohibition of social security benefits for seven years after new citizenship as well as full funding of Medicaid benefits and expanding benefits.
Ryan, who was not available for comment, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002. He has been reelected six times since and is currently serving his seventh term in office.
Ryan currently sits on both House committee for appropriations and budget, controlling the money spent by the federal government.
He supports a change from petroleum reliance to natural gas, as well as investing in wind, solar and geothermal technologies.
He is a supporter of the Affordable Care Act, and is opposed to the Trans Pacific Partnership in its current form, especially after seeing constituents directly affected by previously implemented, similar trade agreements. Ryan has also been involved with addressing the heroin and opioid epidemic.
"I am proud to be the co-chair of the Addiction, Treatment and Recovery Caucus with Congressman John Fleming. Our mission is to educate and raise awareness about addiction and treatment issues," Ryan's website reads. "I joined with Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner in introducing the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), which provides for a robust response to the twin epidemics of opioid and heroin addiction that includes prevention, law enforcement strategies and the expansion of evidence based-treatment."
Write-in candidate Calvin Hill Sr. also is up for election to the seat.
