Anyone in Portage County who has lost a loved one or an acquaintance to suicide is welcome at the International Survivors of Suicide Day event Nov. 17, 12:45 p.m. at the Sue Hetrick Building of Coleman Professional Services, 3922 Lovers Lane, Ravenna. The annual free event is sponsored by the Portage County Suicide Prevention Coalition, Coleman and the Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County. At similar gatherings across the world on the same day, groups will watch a live broadcast where survivors talk about how they cope with the loss. The program also features experts sharing information about suicide and grief.
The live broadcast starts at 1 p.m. It is followed by a time for discussion and sharing. The group will be facilitated by psychologist Joel Mowrey, Ph.D., executive director of the Mental Health & Recovery Board. Mowrey also runs a monthly support group for survivors on the last Wednesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the MHRB office, 155 E. Main St., Kent. For persons who are not able to attend, you can sign up at the website of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, www.afsp.org, to watch past broadcasts. If you are interested in attending, please make a reservation by contacting Mowrey at 330-673-1756, ext. 203, or at his email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
