Ohio jazz trumpeter pastor uses music to connect

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- A pastor and jazz trumpeter says music has helped him reach people of all ages and even bring some of them into the small church he leads in northwest Ohio.

The Blade in Toledo reports (http://bit.ly/wEPDmY ) the Rev. Edward Turner uses music to connect with people when he plays his trumpet and preaches at funerals and performs at jazz clubs and restaurants.

The 59-year-old pastor of Amazing Grace Christian Center started playing the trumpet as a teen but got involved with drugs and wrestled with addiction for nearly two decades. He says he recovered with God's help and now counsels others struggling with chemical dependency.

He also gives free music lessons to neighborhood children to give them a skill that may keep them from getting into the trouble he experienced.
