MIAMI (AP) -- An Ohio man critically wounded during a robbery in Haiti has died in a Miami hospital.

David Bompart of Columbus, Ohio, was shot Jan. 24 outside a bank in Haiti's capital. He underwent two surgeries at a Port-au-Prince trauma center he helped build after the January 2010 earthquake devastated Haiti. He was then flown to Florida for more care.

Officials at Jackson Memorial Hospital say Bompart died Thursday.

Bompart, 50, had been in Haiti to work on an orphanage he and his wife were building through their charity, Eyes Wide Open International. The couple has spent much of the past two years flying between Haiti, Florida and Ohio for their charity work and for medical care for their son, a 14-year-old Haitian boy they adopted after the earthquake.
